How the Find Function Works

Using the Find Feature

Overview

The Find feature in Benchly is a powerful tool that scans your document to identify citations, cases, statutes, rules, and regulations, ensuring they comply with your selected Style Manual. This guide explains how to use the Find feature effectively.

How to Use the Find Feature

  1. Choose a Style Manual:
    • Before initiating the Find process, ensure that you’ve selected the appropriate Style Manual from the dropdown on the Benchly ribbon (refer to the Selecting a Style Manual guide for details).
  2. Start the Find Operation:
    • Click the Find button on the Benchly ribbon to begin the scan.

  3. Scanning Process:
    • Benchly scans the document paragraph by paragraph, identifying citations such as cases, statutes, and regulations (both federal and state).
    • A progress dialog box will display the scan status.
  4. Validation:
    • Benchly automatically validates identified authorities against its database to eliminate false positives.
  5. Marking Authorities:
    • After validation, Benchly adds native TA fields to the document (used for creating the Table of Authorities) and highlights the identified citations.

Best Practices

  • Verify Progress:
    • Keep an eye on the progress dialog box to monitor the scan and validation stages.
  • Highlight Toggle:
    • To disable highlighting, click the Highlight button in the Benchly ribbon.

What to Do Next

Once the Find operation is complete:

  1. Use the Review (Found Authority Panel) feature to examine the identified citations.
  2. Proceed to Confirm Citations for further validation and correction.
