Using the Delete Function

Overview

The Delete function in Benchly’s Found Authority Panel allows you to remove unwanted citations from the Table of Authorities (TOA). This ensures the TOA contains only relevant and accurate entries. Note that using this function removes the citation from the TOA but does not delete it from the body of the document.

How to Use the Delete Function

  1. Access the Found Authority Panel:
    • Open the Found Authority Panel by clicking the Review button on the Benchly ribbon if it isn’t already open.
  2. Select a Citation to Delete:
    • In the panel, locate the citation you want to delete.
    • Click the checkbox next to the citation to activate the Delete button.
  3. Click Delete:
    • Click the Delete button to remove the selected citation.
  4. Confirm Deletion:

    • A dialog box will appear, asking you to confirm the deletion, as shown below:

Click Yes to finalize the removal.

Important Notes

  • Does Not Affect Document Body:
    • Deleting a citation from the TOA does not remove it from the document itself. It only impacts the TOA.
  • Accidental Deletions:
    • If you accidentally delete a citation, re-run the Find operation to rediscover the citation or manually add it back using the Add/Modify Authority function.

Best Practices

  • Review Before Deleting:
    • Ensure the citation is unnecessary for the TOA before deleting.
  • Audit for Missing Citations:
    • After using the Delete function, review your TOA to ensure no important citations were inadvertently removed.
