Reviewing Citations with the Found Authority Panel

 

Overview

The Found Authority Panel in Benchly allows you to review and manage all identified citations after running the Find operation. This panel organizes citations by type (cases, statutes, rules, etc.), making it easy to navigate and review them efficiently.


How to Use the Found Authority Panel

  1. Accessing the Panel:
    • Once the Find operation is complete, the Found Authority Panel will automatically open on the left-hand side of the screen.
    • If it does not appear, click the Review button on the Benchly ribbon to toggle it open, as shown below:

  1. Understanding the Panel:
    • The panel lists all identified citations, grouped by type (e.g., cases, statutes, etc.).
    • Authorities are displayed with their full details, making it easy to verify their accuracy and placement:

 

  1. Expanding the Panel:
    • Place your mouse pointer on the edge of the panel, click and hold, and drag to the left to make the window larger for easier viewing.

  1. Navigating Authority Details:

    • Use the "+" button to expand entries and view related citations or short cites associated with a primary authority:

    • Clicking this opens a list of all subsequent references and/or short cites associated with the primary citation.


 

5.      Filtering Authorities:

    • Select specific categories of authorities to focus on (e.g., Cases, Rules, Statutes) using the Select Authorities window, as shown below:



Best Practices

  • Navigation:
    • Click on a citation in the panel to jump to its location in the document. Alternatively, double-click a citation in the document to highlight it in the panel.
  • Organize Before Building:
    • Ensure all citations are appropriately categorized and reviewed before proceeding to build the Table of Authorities.
