Selecting a Style Manual in Benchly

Overview

The Benchly Microsoft Word Add-In allows you to select a Style Manual that ensures all citations in your document comply with the formatting rules of your jurisdiction or court. By default, Benchly uses The Bluebook, but you can change this to suit your needs.


How to Select a Style Manual

  1. Locate the Style Manual Dropdown:
    • Open Microsoft Word.
    • On the Benchly ribbon, locate the Style Manual dropdown on the far left, as shown below:

            2.  Choose a Style Manual:

    • Click the dropdown to display a list of available style manuals.
    • Select the appropriate manual based on your jurisdiction or court.
  1. Confirm Selection:
    • Once a manual is selected, Benchly will apply the corresponding citation formatting rules throughout the document. Changing the Style Manual
  • If you need to switch to a different style manual after starting a Find operation:
    1. Reset the Document:
      • Click Reset on the Benchly ribbon to clear all previously marked TA fields.
    2. Select the New Manual:
      • The Style Manual dropdown will reappear, allowing you to choose a new manual.
    3. Restart the Process:
      • Rerun the Find operation to apply the new style manual.

Best Practices

  • Always verify your court or jurisdiction requirements before selecting a Style Manual.
  • Reset your document before switching Style Manuals to ensure consistent formatting.
